How People Shared In 2010

What’s interesting to note is that the biggest growth was in people sharing with Gmail. This makes sense to me because email is the most direct way to share a post with someone. Most of the time, when I want to share an article, it’s with a specific person and because I think the article applies to them or might interest them. When I share with Facebook, it is usually just to post it for whomever might randomly come across it on their newsfeed or so that I have a record of it.

What’s also of great interest to me as an internet marketer is the 254% growth of shares with StumbleUpon. For those of you unacquainted with StumbleUpon, it is a discovery engine where people input their interests and are then sent to pages thought to appeal to them. It is a great way to connect with random, yet awesome content, and also a great time killer. The way most people use the service is through a toolbar, where they can thumb up/down pages. ¬†What a lot of users don’t realize though, is that StumbleUpon displays some pages as ads (around 2%). The pages that appear as ads have to be relevant to the topic and are vetted by real humans, but can drive serious traffic. The advertising system is still in the early stages and is relatively cheap for what you get so if you have a cool product or company, StumbleUpon Ads can be an amazing way to generate targeted traffic.
